Dawghouse Dismantled! 9-21-07

Send out the Red Alert! The Dawghouse has been “Dismantled!” And Dr2 isn’t joking about this one baby! Wow, if you missed this CD Release Party for “More Rock & Roll” from Dismantle, listen up then as this party was a huge success! Upon arriving at the Dawghouse, Dr2 wa s taken aback by the shear mass of vehicles parked around the place. We followed the overflow of cars across the street to park! OK, looked like a party to us as we squeezed in through the front door, as da diggity was certainly filled to capacity! Having missed the first act of the night, Sour Mash, we slid to the front of the stage as SyPher was just beginning their set. We talk about stumbling across those “I’ve never heard of them before” bands, and this was similar to one of those. We had heard of them, but never seen these guys, as we were here to celebrate the release of “More Rock & Roll”. So getting to see these ex-Liquid Reality guys “live” was a real treat as they threw down one hell of a set. Playing through some early technical difficulties, SyPher rocked out to a shortened 7 song set that included “Kill The Coward”, “Confessions”, and a new twist on LA Woman that all the women in the house just loved! With no CD out yet, the guys tell Dr2 that they are currently setting up their own studio to lay done some tracks with the intention of sending it out for mastering. We’ll keep our eyes on these guys as they work the Detroit scene, and you’ll hear about the new cd here, as soon as Dr2 does. Up at New York, New York on October 6th, you can them catch them live, or jump on over to their site here @ www.myspace.com/syphermusic and check them out yourself, you won’t be disappointed!

During the load out/in, we had the opportunity to talk up the guys from not only SyPher, but Dismantle also. Being their CD Release party, they had the Merch Table set up with loads of shirts and discs and a line all night long! Dr2 had secured a copy of this disc and actually, we're listening to it right now as we will be preparing a CD Review for the site a little later on. (side note here-since getting our copy at the Critical Bill show at the Emerald Thursday, I haven’t had it out of the player yet! Go get it!) With the Dawghouse crammed full, Dismantle was definitely the band all came to see tonight as you could barely move through the place. As usual we found are way to the front of the mass as Dismantle began to “Dismantle” the Dawghouse. These guys are all about that straight up rock & roll, and their set tonight gave us all of that and more! Giving us “More Rock & Roll” they had the place pumping as the “Dismantle Girls” surrounded the stage. Consisting of Justin Herbert (vox, guitars), Glynn Somma (guitar), Brad Causley (bass), and Eric Brodzic (drums), these guys had the place in a frenzy, feeding off the crowd as much as we were them, slamming out my favorite “Smokin’ and Drinkin”, then bringing it down a notch for “Life at the Top” which turned into one big sing along! They were amazing as they showed everybody on Groesbeck tonight, just what a little More Rock & Roll can do for your soul! Dismantle planned a party tonight, and a party is what they gave all who dared to enter the Dawghouse! With a slew of shows coming up, you won’t be short of opportunities to catch these guys for your self, so check out the gig calendar to find their dates! And make sure you keep your eyes on Dr2 as we’ll soon be posting our review of the new “More Rock & Roll” CD by Dismantle. If you can’t wait then stop by and check out Dismantle on their website here @dismantledetroit.com -until later keep on rockin!

BWNN at Critical Bill CD Release Party @ The Emerald 9-20-07

BWNN at Critical Bill CD Release Party @ The Emerald 9-20-07

Holy Toledo Batman! There was a major party in Da Clem this past Thursday night! And if you did not get down to The Clem and into The Emerald for this “Free” show, don’t worry, a thousand other people did! This Party, put on by Mt. Clemens’ own, Critical Bill, was of monumental proportions, with lines forming outside the theater well before the doors opened at 8. When Dr2 pulled up around 8:15 the line was already about a block long! Inside the Theater the mass of people had the Emerald filled to capacity (if not more….) for Critical Bill’s CD Release party for their latest “Downtown The World” on WestBound Records. Well tonight you could forget about the world, for tonight was all about CB’s triumphant return to “Downtown The Clem!” With an all-star line up supporting them, Critical Bill ripped the Emerald apart. From the opening “This Is Critical” the CB boys ran through an entirely new set from the previous Emerald concert over a month ago. There were many highlights through out the night as Critical Bill’s supporting acts were tremendous. With an unknown duo, PDA, opening the night with a smash up set, BWNN was followed by local rapper Hatch, then another in a long series of “Bombastic” sets by The Unheard, while the preamble to Critical Bill, Zug Izland broke all the rules, every one on tonight’s bill most definitely full-filled their parts. Dr2 wants to talk about the second band up tonight, a band that has no name, well actually they do have a name, they’re called Band With No Name, or BWNN. Having again “stumbled” across these guys during The Detroit Democracy finals back in August, this band from Sterling Heights, really got Dr2’s attention. Tonight I believe they got Mt. Clemens’s attention. As the floor in front of them filled up quickly, BWNN opened their set with their hypnotic song “Empty”. With Jeff Gutt’s flawless vocals cutting through the Emerald’s smoke filled air, BWNN came to the Clem and literally blew away Dr2 and Crew! Gary Pittel’s slicing guitar riff’s just claw their way through the booming rhythm section of Mike Guy (bass), Keith Ottenaucher (drums), and Justin Hackman (keys) as BWNN tore through a six song set featuring their own material. BWNN shined as they gave us “The Criminal”, “Burn”, and then just tore the place apart on the radio worthy “Animal Like”. These guys delivered one of the best sets of the night, in front of a crowd that was a who’s who from the local music scene. It was BWNN that had many in attendance asking Dr2 “hey, who are these guys” as they certainly wowed them with their performance tonight. There was no doubt as to who this massive crowd came to see tonight, but in the end, it was these supporting acts that made this night truly magical. As Critical Bill continues to rise to the top and tour across the country, they are staying true to their word as CB promised to “reach back” and continue to help out the tremendously talented pool of local bands located in the Detroit area. And when given the chance, these bands can step up to the mic and deliver their music with the best. Tonight BWNN did exactly that, check them out on the web @http://www.myspace.com/bwnn , or stop in at Johhny G’s any Tuesday night and catch their amazing All Acoustic show!

Spades Alone TNT’s 9/14/07

Hey don’t you just love it when you stumble across one of those “I’ve never heard of them before” bands that just make you sit up and take notice! Check this out then. Friday night at TNT’s in Clinton Twp. was just one of those times. You see, the Dirty Americans were scheduled to appear that night, and appear they did! Trouble is, who the heck knew who was supporting the show, as there were many contradictions in the promotion of this show. Between their website & my space sites, they had different band combinations playing with the Dirty Americans and not one of those ended up playing! Anyways, Clear and Dangerous Pursuit were listed, but we knew they weren’t playing, Liquid Reality was listed but they had broken up. It wasn’t until the Dr2 bus pulled into the lot and we entered the club, that we finally learned who was playing. The actual lineup ended up being, Spades Alone, Madonna Brothers, Quixotic, and Dirty Americans. The good thing was that Dr2 caught wind that Spades Alone was playing, so we got there early enough to catch their set. Our buddies from the Dirty Americans were also showing some Detroit Love as they too arrived early enough to catch all their supporting acts! So after getting some well deserved cold ones after a long week of working, Spades Alone stepped up onto the stage. What was really surprising was that Dr2 didn’t realize just how young of a band they were! As the lights went down and the PA came up, there was Spades Alone ripping into their opening song “How Many Words” from their CD “Ruddy Modes”. The first thing that catches your eye with Spades Alone is the delivery of the lead vocals by Crystal Lubbick, who is described on their web site as their “Badass Chick Lead Singer”. We agree, as Lubbick moves across the stage, you just can’t help notice just how much fun she’s having! It’s a refreshing sound that certainly reminds me of the early No Doubt. And with Adam Kogelman cranking out those catchy guitar riffs, Jadon Warstler on Bass and Joey Page on the drums, Spades Alone really got our attention as they hit up Tom Petty’s “American Girl”. The set ending “Through The Haze” really showcased the group’s talents as Crystal was finally able to get the SA fans on their feet and up to the stage. Don’t get me wrong here, but the one thing that was apparent (and is what Dr2 appreciates) was the fact that Spades Alone actually had that “raw” sound. You know what I mean, that sound that’s not all glossed over for the radio, but one that says ”hey we’re Spades Alone, and this is our sound”. It was a nice change to all that “Metal This, & Metal That” that seems to be everywhere nowadays. So Dr2 will put their stamp of approval on these guys (and girl), and will keep a watchful eye on Spades Alone as they wind their way through the Detroit Rock & Roll jungle! Check them out on their website @ spadesalone.com then go out and see Spades Alone Rock!

PART 2

The Unheard

The Unheard Took the stage @ 5:30, and proceeded to deliver the tight knit show that we are accustomed to seeing from these guys. When these guys plug in, you need to grab hold of your hat, because they bring it straight at you! What could be better on a hot sunny afternoon then drinking a cold beer and watching some straight up rock and roll. With a rhythm section that includes bassist Chris Biddle, drummer Gino Canale, and guitarists Steve Zornes and Wally Filipiak, Kenny Allen’s vocals shine through the bombastic beats that drive the Unheard’s sound. With big time songs like "You", "Unknown", "All Along", and my favorite “Helpless” (check out the video for this one their site…real cool) The Unheard knows how to rock Detroit Style! They’ll be @ the Emerald Theatre Sept. 20th in support of Critical Bill’s CD Release party. Hey it’s a free show so get there early and see The Unheard rock the Clem. Check’em out @ theunheardonline.com

Back To The Boom Boom Room

Ok, so now that my head is “Clear” and I cannot “Unheard” anything (or is it remember?), we can continue on up Pike Street and back to the Boom Boom Room. The Boom Boom Room, what an awesome name! Too bad it wasn’t an actual “Rock” club, where the Boom Booms could fly. Instead, it’s a Bar/Restaurant during the day that transforms into a “Dance Club” at night. Pretty awesome looking sound system by the way, as there were numerous JBLs & EV’s hanging about the place. As always, we love cold beer, and this place was selling them for $2 bucks and you could take them with you! Anyways, the Boom Boom Room was hopping all day (and night) long, with the Brian Schram Band holding their pre & after parties there. Even had the chance to meet up with Clear who had just finished performing on the Wrif Stage. One thing for sure is that was a wild sight in there, even had some “pole dancing” going on! If you missed the Boom Boom this year, then by all means stop in during next year’s Art, Beats, And Eats Fest (or sooner if you’d like).

Ugly

Ugly, and I mean Ugly! Just look at the way Kevin is dressed! Now that is Ugly! LOL. Actually with these guys, it doesn’t much matter how they’re dressed, they’re gonna rock you blind anyways! As soon as Ugly hit the stage, all hell broke lose. With Pike Street packed to the hilt, Ugly came out to show everyone why their latest single “Sex, Drugs, And Rock & Roll” is getting some pretty heavy air time on Detroit’s premier rock station Wrif. With charismatic front man Geo Teubl leading the party, Ugly literally lit the place on fire. Backed by Donnie Highland (drums), Frank Green (bass), and Kevin McCreey (guitarist), Teubl ferocious vocal resonated all the way to Saginaw Street. It even appeared that as Ugly continued to play, they drew more people in from across the fest. What a sight to see as the throng of people were swaying, pumping their fists, and singing every word of the chorus along with Teubl to “Sex, Drugs. And Rock & Roll”. Boy was that a fun set, and Dr2 could of took a double dose of Ugly that night, and would of listened to that set in it’s entirety again! Ugly seems poised to explode as they are set to drop their Debut Album “Ugly” on October 9th on Rock Ridge Music. There is a CD Release party scheduled in conjunction with Wrif October 19th in The Clem, but the exact site is TBD. Keep your eyes posted to Dr2 as we’ll post it as soon as it is released. In the meantime, to get your Sex, Drugs, or Rock & Roll, check out Ugly @.myspace.com/uglyamerica. I must say that this was one hell of a set by Ugly and we @ Dr2 are anticipating that CD Release Party!

The Matt Austin Band

So Matt Austin was once a Paper Street Saint, isn’t that ironic as The Matt Austin band was picked to replace Paper Street Saints who had a much bigger gig that night up at Pine Knob being hand picked by The Nuge himself to open the show. I’m Sure Matt’s ok with that as he has had his own success as of late. Not only did they get a great time slot for the Arts, Beats, And Eats Fest here, they also won the chance to open on the “Big Stage” up in Clarkston for none other than Styx & Def Leppard! These guys have also recently shared the stage with the Dirty Americans & The Romantics up at the St. Clair River Fest. Pretty busy summer for these guys, and it was great to get the chance to catch up with them before and after their set. Playing to an ever growing crowd, The Matt Austin Band actually recorded their set for a possible video. With the sun setting and the stage lights on, it really did create a unique look to their set. Cranking out their popular songs “World Wide Flight” & “Between The Lines” Matt & his rhythm section of Rob Morand & Adam Fox continued the onslaught that the bands before them created. Another excellent set from one of Detroit’s own, Matt Austin Band rocked it out, setting the stage for the day’s final act. Check them out @ myspace.com/mattaustinrocks

The Brian Schram Band

OK. This was what everybody was waiting for. With the stage being wrapped in their trademark “Crime Scene” tape, dozens of beach balls scattered across the stage and “Trouble D”, Dave Dion getting his last text message in (seriously, Dave was receiving and sending text messages on stage right up to the start of the set!), The Brian Schram Band was set to close out this awesome day of Detroit Rock & Roll! And close it out they did. Pike street now was overflowing with hordes of fellow Detroit Rock fans, as The Brian Schram Band launched into their set, sending all those beach balls into the crowd creating yet another crazed frenzy! Drawing completely from their latest CD “Disturbing The Peace” (produced by Ugly’s Geo Teubl), BSB band ripped off all the fav’s from “Your So Video” , “I Am My Own Man” , “Privacy” and even included their cover of “White Room”. With the amazing 12 yr old super kid, Jason Hartless, supplying the back beat, and Dave Dion laying down the bass lines, Brian Schram took control of the stage and never gave it up. As the craziness climaxed on stage, the crowd followed suit, with Schram finishing the set (and night) by unplugging his guitar, taking hold of the neck and appeared ready to smash it to pieces on the stage. Instead, much to the disbelief of all, launched his guitar into the air nearly 150 ft, and over the brick wall that was next to the stage, landing inside the closed day care center playground. Needless to say, after the shock wore off, the crowd erupted, as the guys left the stage. What an amazing end to an amazing day. Absolutely one amazing show, from one of Detroit’s best rock bands out there today. You can check these guys out @ www.schramband.com, As the light’s came up, and the crowd headed home, Dr2, with Crew in tow, headed on out of what was probably the best full day line up at this year’s Arts, Beats, And Eats Fest. We’ll definitely be looking forward to next year’s fest with even higher expectations from our favorite Local Rock Band’s. Be sure to keep an eye on Dr2 @ www.detroitrockreview.com for all the latest happenings in the area and from across the state. Till next time, over.

10th Annual Arts, Beats, And Eats Fest 2007

The Allies

What an absolutely perfect weekend for this hot fest now in it’s 10th year in Downtown Pontiac. From the day’s early morning cool breezes to the blazing mid afternoon sun, this years Saturday lineup on the Detroit News-Comcast Stage refused to cool off, even as the sun was setting on one hell of a long day of rock and roll mayhem! Today was an early day for all of us here @ Dr2 as we where entirely focused on getting to the Fest in time for the Opening Set by one our fav’s Radiocraft. Arriving early we were able to catch the unscheduled performance of the Allies, an acoustic duo that includes Overloaded’s Chris Gillen and Mindcandy’s Cmak. These guys rock out with their respective groups, but turn it down a notch or two while performing as the allies. We at Dr2 really like this as it certainly “showcases” each of their talents both individually as the Allies, as well as when they perform with their groups. What better way is there to hear what someone is made of than when you strip away the flash and let the music do the talking? An awesome beginning to the day, The Allies Rocked! Check them out @www.myspace.com/thealliesacoustic.

Radiocraft

After a short load in, Radiocraft was set to take the stage, but not before a brief Public Announcement warning whoever parked their cars “over there” needs to move them now before they get towed. As we expected, no one moved except for Suzie as Radiocraft kicked into high gear! Having seen these guys a number of times, it was awesome to finally hear some of the newer stuff that will be on their new disc that is scheduled to drop in November. Running through a few of the new ones, Radiocraft confirmed that they do indeed deserve to be on this stage today. With a rousing rendition of a song that had no name- “today we’ll call it, tow my car” (which by the way has nothing to do with the song) , Dr2 was blown away by this new “No Name” song and are extremely anxious for this new release! Stay tuned to Dr2’s CD Release schedule for the exact date as it comes available. You can find Radiocraft on the web @ www.radiocraftmusic.com .

Boom Boom Room

A quick walk around the fest revealed that they had just about anything one could want when it came to food! Hot sun, delicious food, ice cold beer, and lot’s of people watching! They had stages set up at the end of every street, which was a cool way to get all the people through the vendor areas. Bad part about it was that there were so many people that getting from stage to stage took a bit of agility! And where the hell where all the Porta Johns? Every time you had to go, you had to go a distance! Oh well, if it wasn’t for this, we wouldn’t have found the Boom Boom Room! What a riot Dr2 & Crew had in between all the sets, with the place decorated with a retro style that put you in that “Jetsons” style era. Located at the corner of Pike & Saginaw, it was a great place to cool off and grab some “less expensive” munchies.

Frequency 54

Grabbing a few of the $2.00 beers to go from the Boom Boom Room, we slide back down Pike Street to the Stage, were Frequency 54, an awesome band from the Flint area, was just getting underway. Not quite sure what happened next but like five minutes into their set, the PA just cut out! Now Dr2 is always one who likes to see how bands react to adversity, but this one was totally unfair! Frequency 54 had no choice but to stand there and wait for the sound crew to get them up & running as quickly as possible. After about a 10 min delay, the power came back up (tripped circuit they tell us……) and Frequency 54 was able to continue their set. These guys always put on a great show and today were no different. Their latest CD “beginnings”, their third, was just released this past June, and the boys from Flint played plenty of the new stuff, including their remake of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” & everybody’s favorite “The Waltz”. Keep an eye on these guys @frequency54.com and check them out next time they are in your town.

Soul Circus

How do you throw an afternoon party? Invite Soul Circus to your stage! These guys will get you up on your feet and rock your socks off! Probably one of the most improved bands out there today, Soul Circus continues to impress Dr2 with their ability to pull off mixing in a cover as if it were their own! With Kevin Kanka’s knee healing up, the band comes together as the guys really played off each other, giving everyone a heck of a show. At one point in the show, their Lead Guitarist Tommy Furbacher went “wireless” as he roamed the street in front of the stage & finishing up on the Merch Table next to the sound booth! From the riveting Soul Circus tunes of “Dirty Little Habitz”, “Flesh and Bone”, and their take of Aretha’s “Chain Of Fools”, to actually cranking out Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, Soul Circus actually pulled it off as they nailed it! Another fun party set from one of Detroit’s Ultimate party bands! Check them out @ www.soulcircus.us , they play everywhere around town, go see them!

Clear

So Clear is a Band from Detroit that we had not seen before this afternoon, even though they have been around for 8 years. Well it was worth the wait. Clear throws down on stage and never lets up as Mike Hughes (vox), Derek Cooke (guitar), Jason Lollio (bass), and Rick Downey (drums) come crashing down on you. With some heavy hitting melodies like “The Machine”, “The Replaced” and “Fragile Divine” Clear has a very distinct rock sound. Hughes with his huge vocals, comes across crisp and “Clear” over top of this thunderous rhythm section. We had a chance to talk with them for a while after the set at that hot spot called The Boom Boom Room. Dr2 really dug this band and will certainly be checking in with them from time to time. You should too! Check them out @cleardetroit.net

Stay tuned for “Part 2” where we’ll be covering the 2nd half of the 10th Annual Arts, Beats, And Eats Fest with The Unheard, Ugly, The Matt Austin Band, The Brian Schram Band and more raucous happenings from the Boom Boom Room and more!

Yankeeville @ The Silver Spur & Broke @ The Dawghouse 8/18

on .

Alright, I know it’s almost a week ago, but I have to write about last Saturday, August 18th. The night started a little low key, with the DR2 crowd hanging out and tryin’ to figure out which way to point the bus. It was finally decided that we should skip the Woodward Dream Cruise and stay on the East Side. We had been invited by Howie Deville of The Silver Spur to come out and see the band and we had gotten a heads up from Broke and Dangerous Pursuit that they were playing with Paper Street Saints down the street from The Spur at The Dawghouse in Clinton Township. Soooo we were on our way. We arrived at The Spur first in time to catch the line-dancin’ regulars moving off the floor in preparation for the opening set of Yankeeville. After scoping out their website, we expected a Country cover band with some originals. Boy did we underestimate Eric and the guys!! Yankeeville is definitely unique. They opened their set in ordinary enough fashion with a variety of country covers of Dirks Bentley, Big & Rich, Brad Paisley, etc.. but then switched gears to do a cover of the Dukes Of Hazzard Theme song and then switched to Sweet Home Alabama. And they were just gettin’ started. Eric aka “Taco” cannot stay on the stage, often roaming the dance floor and stage to sing to the audience, up close and personal. Adam on guitar also joined Taco by wandering off stage to the center of the dance floor for a screaming lead solo! These guys showed right away that they had a lot of personality and really love what they are doing. Personally, that’s what I love to see in a band. I want to see them having fun. It makes me have fun and enjoy the night! Well. The first set was over and we decide it would be best to jump back in the cruiser and head down the street to see who was on at The Dawghouse. Greeted at the door by the owner, Jim, with the bad news that, because of a conflict with The Magic Bag, the Paper Street Saints were not going to play tonight, but they were going to reschedule for a later date. Our disappointment was not over because we then learned that Dangerous Pursuit had already played their set. Well, being optimistic folks we asked who had yet to play and learned that we were just in time for Broke’s set. So the night was looking up. This group has been around a while, recently playing a lot of gigs with their new singer/diva Lauren Whitmore, but we had not been able to catch their show. We settled in and rocked out to the set that included Broke’s originals “1888”, “Stone Broke In Detroit” (my favorite), and “Lanterns”. These guys (and gal) can rock!! With Kevin Smith rippin’ on Guitar(looking like he was ready to mosh at a moments notice), Randy Werner providing the steady rhythm on Bass, the big man, Doug Rowe hammering out the beat behind the skins, and, of course, Lauren beltin’ out the lead vox , they definitely jam!! Lauren has a set of pipes to rival Pat Benatar, in fact, they covered “Heartbreaker” but with serious attitude. If you like Detroit Rock-and-Roll and you get the chance, Broke is a definite must-see! Check out their site and listen to their music at www.myspace.com/brokedetroit . We will be watching this band. So at this point most sane individuals would have probably called it a night and headed home. Key words there, “most” and “sane”. We at DR2 have never been accused of being sane, so we were off to head back to The Spur to try to catch Yankeeville’s last set. We walk in and the insanity was just getting into full swing. “Taco” and the boys are in the middle of a cover of “When the Bodies Hit The Floor” by Drowning Pool!! The rest of the set continues in the same fashion with the music swinging from Hank Williams “Family Tradition” to Nickelback’s “Animals” and back again to Toby Keith, then Poison. What a RIOT!!! These guys made me regret missing their second set. Next time we won’t make that mistake. So if you are looking for a great night out, singing along with “Taco” and the gang havin’ a blast, look these guys up at www.myspace.com/yankeeville or www.yankeeville.net . So with our musical appetite fully satisfied for yet another Saturday night we piled back in the bus and headed home. Until the next show...... Keep Rockin’!!D:)

Sponge @ Club 54 w/ Army of Good, Busted Puppets, & Avatar (8-10-07)

Sponge…. Avatar….Busted Puppets….Army Of Good….a packed Club 54 on a Friday night. All I can say is, thank god it was a Friday! Man if you missed this event at Club 54 la st Friday night, you missed another jamming night of Detroit Rock & Roll! With the stage set, a massive PA brought in by Razor, (did I mention massive?) a system I’m told that was pushing 15,000 watts which literally shook da Club and you! Awesome! The night was shaping up to be a rather large one as Army Of Good took the stage @ 9 o’clock to a full club. We had seen these guys a while back on one of those cold nights back in March @ da club with a few other bands. Well, I can say that these guys have really turned it up a notch or two since then. Hailing from the Flint area, with Biff Benson (Vocals), Andy Bowman (Vocals,Guitar), Paul Mazzola (Lead Guitar), Joey Stewart (Drums), Korey Pickett (Bass), they ripped off a 40 minute set that wasn’t anything like the first! Backed by that enormous PA, Army Of Good came across loud, crisp, & clear. They really get the crowd going when Bowman puts down his guitar, and picks up his mic to join Biff up front to start trading off vocals and rhymes. They’ll be at the Dirt Fest in Birch Run on August 25th with 49 other bands. Check them out on their myspace page @ myspace.com/armyofgood1.

On a hot summer night, what could be better than a hot rock & roll band like the Busted Puppets. I’m not talking just hot, I’m mean like Kid Rock’s So Hot! Finding any info on this band proved to be rather frustrating. They have an EP out called “Drugs & Ammunition”, which was recorded with Tommy K over @ Digital Vision in Wixom. We do know that the band is from Highland Michigan, and features the mesmerizing “front woman”, Brittany, who, once she steps on stage, has everyone watching as she slithers and dances across the stage. Wearing next to nothing, Brittany uses her looks as well as her awesome voice to captivate her audience, bringing them into her music one at a time, and then unleashing that mysterious glance, that makes you sit up & notice. Playing a 40 minute set, the Busted Puppets, drew from their EP “Drugs & Ammunition”, which is overtly laden with that 4/20 mindset (it is rock & roll after all), with the songs “left Unsaid” and “Waltz The Trapeze” , then lit up the stage while laying down their new tune “Paranoia”. Dancing off the stage as her set ended, this 5 ft bundle of energy could not be contained as Brittany danced and jumped to just about every song Motorcity Mike could spin. Definitely a group worth seeing, check them out @ www.myspace.com/bustedpuppets, this won’t be the last time we hear from this unique Rock & Roll outfit.

As 11 pm rolled around, da Club started to swoon with the mass of people now gathered for tonight’s show. Up next was Avatar, another band from the “outskirts” of Detroit City, from Clarkston, home of the infamous Pine Knob. Oh wait, I mean DTE Energy…..ah who cares, it’s still Pine Knob. This is a 3 pc that will roll up its sleeves, then pound you with their straight forward rock & roll. Rolling with the large crowd now surrounding the stage, Avatar delivered a set worthy of the opening act for a big name like Sponge. Set squarely in the roots of Detroit rock & roll, these guys surely now how to get a club moving. As the opening chords from “Fallen” hit the PA, da Club was on its feet. By the time they hit us up with my favorites from them,” She Says” & “Closer”; Avatar had succeeded in their mission, getting Club 54 hyped up for the main act Sponge. Check em out at http://www.thebandavatar.com to hear their stuff, they rock!

With da Club at full tilt now, the clock passed Midnight with no Sponge in sight. With the show producer, Ron from Razor Entertainment, sitting at the Dr2 table, Club owner Maria was getting a bit antsy when it approached 12:30 with still no Sponge in sight. Ron was beckoned to retrieve the band from where ever they were. With Ron running outside to find out what was up, Vinnie D and his crew came running in and jumped up on stage to a thunderous applause. Upon Ron’s return, we find out that they were trying to “Party Till They Dropped” out in the parking lot! Once a rock star, always a rock star! As the show was coming to a close, Sponge just stepped on the pedal and floored the entire club with their hit “Plowed”, done as recorded and also slowing it down, letting da Club sing acappella with them, obviously to drive home the “live” album sound! And it didn’t stop there, as Sponge went on to cover Kid Rock’s famous chant (made famous by the Red Wings), “Ain’t No Party, Like A Detroit Party, randomly exchanging the Detroit, with Club 54, the roof was about to bounce into the parking lot, especially when the aforementioned song was only a lead in to the newest Sponge song “Party To We Drop”. Inviting all the ladies up on stage to dance, the show ended as it had begun, with Sponge jumping off the stage and back out into the parking lot. Check the group out @ www.spongetheband.com. Again, this will be a night to remember for Club 54!
