BWNN at Critical Bill CD Release Party @ The Emerald 9-20-07

Holy Toledo Batman! There was a major party in Da Clem this past Thursday night! And if you did not get down to The Clem and into The Emerald for this “Free” show, don’t worry, a thousand other people did! This Party, put on by Mt. Clemens’ own, Critical Bill, was of monumental proportions, with lines forming outside the theater well before the doors opened at 8. When Dr2 pulled up around 8:15 the line was already about a block long! Inside the Theater the mass of people had the Emerald filled to capacity (if not more….) for Critical Bill’s CD Release party for their latest “Downtown The World” on WestBound Records. Well tonight you could forget about the world, for tonight was all about CB’s triumphant return to “Downtown The Clem!” With an all-star line up supporting them, Critical Bill ripped the Emerald apart. From the opening “This Is Critical” the CB boys ran through an entirely new set from the previous Emerald concert over a month ago. There were many highlights through out the night as Critical Bill’s supporting acts were tremendous. With an unknown duo, PDA, opening the night with a smash up set, BWNN was followed by local rapper Hatch, then another in a long series of “Bombastic” sets by The Unheard, while the preamble to Critical Bill, Zug Izland broke all the rules, every one on tonight’s bill most definitely full-filled their parts. Dr2 wants to talk about the second band up tonight, a band that has no name, well actually they do have a name, they’re called Band With No Name, or BWNN. Having again “stumbled” across these guys during The Detroit Democracy finals back in August, this band from Sterling Heights, really got Dr2’s attention. Tonight I believe they got Mt. Clemens’s attention. As the floor in front of them filled up quickly, BWNN opened their set with their hypnotic song “Empty”. With Jeff Gutt’s flawless vocals cutting through the Emerald’s smoke filled air, BWNN came to the Clem and literally blew away Dr2 and Crew! Gary Pittel’s slicing guitar riff’s just claw their way through the booming rhythm section of Mike Guy (bass), Keith Ottenaucher (drums), and Justin Hackman (keys) as BWNN tore through a six song set featuring their own material. BWNN shined as they gave us “The Criminal”, “Burn”, and then just tore the place apart on the radio worthy “Animal Like”. These guys delivered one of the best sets of the night, in front of a crowd that was a who’s who from the local music scene. It was BWNN that had many in attendance asking Dr2 “hey, who are these guys” as they certainly wowed them with their performance tonight. There was no doubt as to who this massive crowd came to see tonight, but in the end, it was these supporting acts that made this night truly magical. As Critical Bill continues to rise to the top and tour across the country, they are staying true to their word as CB promised to “reach back” and continue to help out the tremendously talented pool of local bands located in the Detroit area. And when given the chance, these bands can step up to the mic and deliver their music with the best. Tonight BWNN did exactly that, check them out on the web @http://www.myspace.com/bwnn , or stop in at Johhny G’s any Tuesday night and catch their amazing All Acoustic show!
