Underland CD Release Party @ The Dawg House (2-1-08)

So Friday night, dodging the storm and looking for some rock-and-roll, the DR2 crew ended up at The Dawg House for the Underland CD Release Party for their new Disc “The Black, White and Gray”. We weren't disappointed either, finding a house full of "dawgs" just a-barking to rock & roll! We even met the Dawg House mascot for the first time tonight, felt kind of funny as he just wanted to hang out with us all night(see picture), yet never said a damn word….. Celebrating this long anticipated disc, Underland brought along all their friends to really gave it that “party” feel, they even had one of Dr2’s favorites, Radiocraft on hand to help out with the night’s festivities. It appears that Suzie Ferro (vox) of Radiocraft has overcome some throat issues that had threatened to sideline her for awhile, but we're pleased to announce that she is definitely on her game and has been aggressively booking shows around town. On this subject, mark your calendars for March 29th over @ the Token, where Suzie tells me she’s putting together what is billed as “The Copy Cat Show”. It promises to be a night full of surprises as each band on the bill will be covering a song from one of the other band’s on the bill…..get it, Copy Cat! Should be quite interesting….. Anyways Radiocraft hit the stage around 10:15 or so kicking it off with Bribe The Guards and as usual proceeded to deliver their trademark tight set that leaves you amazed and wanting more! Giving us most of their new stuff from “Catch Your Death”, Radiocraft also previewed some new material that sounded great, before finishing the set off with Walk All Over You. Check Radiocraft out by heading over to the Dr2 Links or you can find them in our Top Friendsover on our MySpace page. We had a chance to talk up Lou Abraham (vox), Chris Lucas, (bass) & Bob Payne (drums) from Underland about the new disc, really a great bunch of guys that took on the task of putting out their first disc themselves. We had seen Underland almost a year ago back at the now closed Club 54, where they played with Hell Rides North. So, we were excited to catch them again here at The Dawg House where the sound system is a huge step up from that place. Boy, we weren’t disappointed either, as Underland stepped up and threw it down, HARD! Cranking it out, this power trio plows you over with their ferocious thunder! They nailed their set that included John Doe, This Place, and then tore the place apart with Dr2’s favorite, I.S.P. Working the crowd into a frenzy, Underland couldn’t keep their female fans away as they invaded the stage to dance the set away! Awesome night, you just got to love a crazed crowd! Underland wasn’t going to just celebrate this new Disc at the Dawg House as they were off the next night for CD Release Party #2 down at the Rack & Roll in Riverview with Ray Street Park! Hey, hit these guys up over at their site, you’ll find them in the Dr2 Links or on our Top FriendsList over on the MySpace page. Detroit Rock Review, the ONLY place for Local Music News & Reviews! Hip Hoppin In The Box

Hip Hoppin In The Box

If you weren’t at The Box this past Saturday night for the Hush Video Release Party for their upcoming single “Rise Again”, then you missed out on one of THE hottest shows so far in 2008! Amazing does not even come close to describing the complete mayhem that went down inside this recently renamed eastside hangout called The Box! Dropping into C-town, Hush packed them in and threw a party that was off the hook, even spotted Marco Polo & Esham in the house. Opening the night was JIVA, a gritty, R&B flavored, rock band that had all the right elements to get the party started as they lit the crowd up with awesome renditions of “Sexy Back” and the classics, “Let’s Go Crazy” & “Dirty Nicky” from Prince. Definitely worth checking out as they also banged out some cool tunes of their own. Hit em’ up on their MySpace page or on the Dr2 Links page. The Box has certainly been gaining in popularity lately as a lot of live music has been hitting the floor most Saturday Nights, and it looks like that may be expanded as the Wrif will be dropping in again soon. With the “Hottest” bar on the Eastside in full swing, it was time for the bartenders to show their stuff, shooting flaming balls of 151 from their mouths in a brilliant display of insanity! If you’re lucky enough to be near the bar, keep an ear open for the blasting sirens that will send The Box’s hot wait staff onto the bar armed with bottles full of free shots! Awesome, as you just open wide and they pour, never quite knowing what your poison is until it’s over! With The Box in a full carnival-like party mode, it was time for Hush to hit the stage. Amongst a flurry of hypnotic beats, Hush opened his set with The March from his Geffen Records release “Bullet Proof”, following up with Fired Up, a tune which was heard on every episode of NBC’s reality series “The Contender”. Hush Is Coming finished up the 1st half of the action as the band took a break and those damn sirens went off again, keeping the insanity flowing! Then, the video screens were dropped, the TV’s turned on, and Hush premiered their video for Rise Again, the highly anticipated single from their upcoming album. What an awesome video, set in and around Detroit and shot by Detroit’s own award winning director, Daniel Casey. Next, Hush returned to the stage, previewing a number of songs slated for the new album, and the thermometer began to rise, sending everyone’s hands in the air, whipping the crowd into one of those Chin-Tiki like frenzies seen in 8 Mile! Highlights of the night had to be; the kick-ass remake of the Who’s classic, Baba O’Riley, which was earth shattering, and the set-ending, Rise Again done live to the new Video! What an unbelievable night!! The Dr2 & Crew was left shaking their heads in disbelief, but we weren’t alone, as the entire crowd was left dazed and confused! Keep an eye out as Hush is poised to set the world on fire once again with the new album and hopefully some more live shows, check them out over on Dr2 MySpace Top Friends or find them in the Dr2 Links. Rockin Out In Ham Town

Rocking Out In Ham Town

Despite sub-zero weather this past Saturday night, Dr2 wasn’t going to miss the Hotness CD Release Party for their disc, “3rd Times a Charm”, at Small’s in the heart of Hamtramck. We knew it was cold outside but the music promised to be smokin’ hot! With temp’s in the teens, Dr2 loaded up and headed south, destination Ham Town! Been a while since we had a chance to get back down to this cool club where we’ve seen plenty of awesome shows, and where anybody who’s anybody in the Detroit Scene has played. If you’ve never been, you really need to check it out, as they have one unique set-up, including their trademark, red-blocked, rock room that houses an awesome sound system. The weather didn’t seem to keep too many people home, as the place was packed, nor did it slow down the Riff2 Nominee, (6 nominations) the Beggars, or their raucous lead singer Steve Tuthill. Storming the stage, the Beggars set out to rip Small’s apart, nearly succeeding as the acrobatic Tuthill swiveled and swayed his way across the stage actually splitting his trousers wide open. Definitely the showman, Tuthill was non-stop action as he “ripped” out some fav’s from their latest release “Party To The People”, including It’s All About Me, Thieves, and Gonna Hava Party. These guys can never stay on the stage and, true to form, Tuthill roamed the crowd and stoked the excitement with their party anthem “Stop, Drop, Rock & Roll”. Certainly worth checking out, you can find them in the Dr2 Band Links and, of course, they’re in ourTop Friendsover on MySpace! The night had just begun! With Universal Temple Of Divine Power on the bill, you know there’s going to be some serious guitar action goin’ down with Elliot Moses and Chuck Burns on stage together. Another Riff2 Nominee (2 nominations), UTDP plays it straight up, with Elliot & Burns trading off riffs & vocal duties throughout the night and Art McCauley & Chris Andrews supplying some serious backing power! Only recently releasing their latest CD, “Hand of God” (check out the Dr2 View) back in November, the guys had some fresh music to showcase and truly rocked the house! Dr2 was blown away with their live show. Bringing the gospel to the rock, UTDP, with their congregation in the house, delivered the message with the tunes “The Man”, “Bite The Apple”, and the title track of their latest offering “Hand of God”. If you too, would like to worship, then be sure to head on over to their MySpace page which, as always, you can find in our Top Friends”. Well, tonight was a long time in the making, and Hotness was in the house to celebrate the release of their Debut CD “3rd Times A Charm” (check out the Dr2 View), and celebrate they did! Another RIFF2 Nominee, The Hotness, has exploded onto the scene in the past year or so, receiving many accolades from within the community. An amazing sight, Paul Barning (vox) not only sings, but kicks it out on an old Hammond organ, lending one unique sound to their classic, blues-infused, brand of rock-&-roll. These guys definitely have the whole rock thing figured out as they have entirely too much fun doing what they do! They tore through their new “classics” incuding Dr2’s favorites, 3” Heels and Last Woman, even coaxing Elliot from UTDP up on stage to join Matt Leider on guitar duty. By that time the house was going crazy! The frontmen get a lot of attention, but rounding out Hotness is none other than Carl “Hotness” Yute (bass) and Jim “Skippy” Denomme (drums). Yet another bombastic rhythm section for this night of pure Detroit Rock! Check out Hotness before it’s too late, as their schedule continues to grow! Check em out over at their MySpace page, find them in our Top Friendson the Dr2 MySpace page, and over in the Dr2 Band Links. Remember to Support Local Music Or Their May Not Be Any.....

TNT’s 89X I’m With The Band 2.0 Week 1

TNT’s 89X I’m With The Band 2.0

What a turnout for Week One of the 89X I’m With The Band 2.0 Contest over at TNT’s Thursday Night, definitely looked like a success to us here at Dr2! After a week of online voting, we saw Band With No Name’s song “Empty” win a close contest over Krank Nine’s “Thrill Of It All” followed by Akrylic Sun & Band of One. So it was on to the performances Thursday night to see who would win week one is this once in a life time opportunity.Pulling into TNT’s we could tell it was gonna be a crazy night as the lot was nearly full, with a line to get in, great to see the local support going strong! Lot’s of familiar faces running around too, as many bands that weren’t playing were in the house to check out the action. First band up was one that we had never seen before called Body Of One, looked like they had some tables filled up with fans there for support. Krank Nine, who finished behind BWNN by only 50 votes in the on-line vote, came out and rocked the house with a great performance, nailing their 8 song set that included Dead Dolls, Thrill Of It All, and Pharoes. Really good set by these guys out of Mt Clemens, definitely a group worth checking out! They have a couple of shows coming up over at The Royal Oak Music Theater and The Dawg House so go check em out over at MySpace.com/krankninedetroit. Akrylik Sun had the third spot, and started their set off by having some “dancers” up on stage with during their first song, Hate Me. From Detroit, Akrylic Sun had a good sized crowd with them to, as they romped their way through their set list that included Bed Of Stone and Bitter Taste. Straight up rock & roll from these guys who can be found @ MySpace.com/akryliksun, where you’ll find all things Akrylik Sun!

Well the last band up tonight was Band With No Name, the winners of the on line vote, and judging by the amount of people they brought in who stayed to the end, it came as no surprise that they also ended on top with the vote at the door. Fronted by Jeff Gutt (vox), BWNN came here tonight to make a name for themselves, and did not disappoint, dropping a seven song set that was explosive! Opening with It’s Alright..It’s Over Gutt’s vocals are literally amazing, commanding your attention with his flawless delivery. Backed by an extraordinary rhythm section featuring the bombastic Mike Guy on bass, “Antic” on keys, and Keith Ottenbaucher on drums, Gary Pittel shines through with his crunching guitar riffs during The Criminal. Getting a huge response from the fans was the on-line vote “winning” song Empty, which again highlighted Gutt’s vocal ability and Pittel’s ferocious guitar playing. The definitive moment of the night had to be the set ending Animal Like which erupted the crowd into an impromptu “mosh pit” while the Thunder from Guy’s bass came crashing down on us like a tsunami! Working TNT’s into an “animal like” frenzy, BWNN had Dr2 on it’s feet as they ripped it loud and hard as Guy ended the song with his bass flying to the stage! Unbelievable and a true contender! Possibly one of the best sets we’ve witnessed in a long time around here, especially the amazing energy they expelled doing it! Keep your eyes on these guys as they also won the final phase of the “Judges” vote to sweep the night. They’ll now be heading into the studio where they’ll get to record one song over at Metro Recordings Studio for an upcoming 89X Home Boy Compilation Album. Be sure to mark your calendars as Band With No Name will be back to TnT’s for the first Semi-Final May 1st. Check them out in the meantime over at their MySpace page, you’ll find them listed over in our Top Friends here. Remember, on-line voting has already begun for week 2, where Spades Alone, Konnipition Fit, Red Letter Anthem, and B-Day are competing to win phase 1. We have a link up on the MySpace page to make it easier for you to vote, so till next time, remember to…….SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!

In Da Dawg House

In Da Dawg House

Ok, so we head up to The Dawg House this past Saturday night to help the Soul Circus clan celebrate Kelly’s 40th birthday. Kind of figured it would be one of those typical, crazy-ass Soul Circus parties that they are so well known to throw. Guess what? It was! A packed diggity, lots of suds flowing, and a band, we here at Dr2, had yet to see before. As usual, Soul Circus hit the Dawg House stage with a ton of energy, literally kickin’ all present in the ass. Rachael May even joined the guys on stage for a couple of tunes (who else could get her to sing back up for them), and did an awesome (again) rendition of the Aretha Franklin mega hit Chain of Fools. Dr2 is getting excited for the release of their new CD they have in the works, as they previewed a handful of the “new” stuff that was off the hook. No birthday party is complete without a cake, and Soul Circus came through as the outrageous “Monkay” finally appeared front and center to deliver Kelly her Birthday Cake, complete with shots! Soul Circus even brought in Broke to close out the night, which gave Dr2 an opportunity to catch up with Laura (Vox) & Doug (drums) of Broke who we had not had a chance to see since we caught them way back in the summer. A great band that can really kick it. They did not let us down, delivering a strong set and, new to us, featuring a fifth member, a new guitar player, Shawn O’Neal, has joined the band since we last saw them and really helps fill out the sound. But, the big surprise tonight was the opening set from Ballz Deluxe, a new group we hadn’t seen before. These guys have been around for a while, playing in and out of a variety of groups, but it wasn’t until late 2005 when things came together for the Ballz project. Born out of a desire to rock it harder, these guys do exactly that. Obviously, being first up is a hard spot to play, since many in the early crowd might not know your band and often will spend more time talking than listening. This does not hold true for us here at Dr2, since we thrive on looking for “That” band, the one we had never seen, maybe never even heard of that jumps out and grabs your attention. They were “it”, it took exactly two songs before they had our heads bobbing and fists raised to their jams, and it was still early on in the night! That song, It’s Going Down Now, a beat-down anthem, just blew us away! Working through a 10 song set, Ballz Deluxe delivered nothing short of an energetic, “ballz-out” frickin’ rock & roll frenzy! Consisting of Rick on vocals, Scott and Chuck on guitars, and includes Zuby on bass with Justin hammering out the back beat, Ballz Deluxe set the Dawg House on fire with Shake That Thing and Don’t Wait For Me before bringing down the house with Fall Down On Me. Gonna have to keep an eye on these guys as they wind their way through the Detroit Rock Jungle, so keep it tuned to DetroitRockReview as I’m sure we’ll be begging for more. Or go ahead and check them out for yourself by heading on over to the Dr2 Links where you can find a link to their site or check out our MySpace page where you’ll find them in our Top Friends”. They’ll be playing the WRIF World Bar Tour over at the Bullfrog in Redford along with Soul Circus this Friday night (you might even see DR2 there), or catch them up in Fenton with UGLY as they invade MO Doggies. Either way, go out and Support Local Music before it’s too late! Rock On!

89X Home Boy Battle of the Bands Finals @ TNT's 12-20-07

89X Home Boy Battle of the Bands Finals @ TNT's 12-20-07

If you really love local music, then TNT’s was the place to be last Thursday as 89X was in the house with the Finals of their “Home Boy” Battle of the Bands, a contest to win the opening slot for 89X’s New Years Eve Bash with Hot, Hot, Heat over at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency. Five bands with a wide variety of music styles ranging from Rock, Pop, Metal, Punk, and even Hip Hop competed for the grand prize from 89X. With TnT’s packing in the crowd, it was nothing short of a crazed group as everyone had their personal favorites with most letting it be known who it was they were here to see. We caught the first act up the week before when they won their play in battle, Red Letter Anthem plays a Hip Hop Rock style that really burns it up as their sound gets things pumping including their fans. Fronted by local rapper “Elementzero”, they mix up the rhymes over top a driving rock beat that is anchored by Josh (drums), Tom (bass) and features the blazing guitar hooks of Shane. Non-Stop action followed as they dropped a six song set that included Illusionist, All The Way, & Freestyle, which is actually done freestyle (with the subject picked by the audience), they even set the Drum Kit off to the side of the stage as the guys take turns ripping it up on the drum riser! I would expect to hear more from this young group as they are readying some new tracks that Dr2 is anxious to sample. Great bunch to talk with too as their feet are planted firmly on the ground, check them out January 9th over at the Royal Music Theater. You can sample up their sounds on their site by finding them in our Top Friendsover on our MySpace page, or pick them out in the Dr2 Band Links!

In the second slot tonight was one that we’ve never had the chance to see before, so we were excited to get a chance to catch their set here. Almost Free came to TNT’s with their unique style of music that veers from the mainstay, and turned some heads in the process with one hell of an awesome set! A definite Detroit Sound that would appear to have been bred straight out of the city, Almost Free, laid down a seven song set that had us here at Dr2 feeling as if we were in Corktown at the Lager House! Kranking it up with their Volumes, this power trio of Andy (vox/guitar), Bobby on the bass and Garren providing the “bombastic beat” from behind his kit, gave us the sounds of the city with their My Veins, Lines, and Broke Down Town as they had TNT’s rolling with their laidback/high energy set! We’ll be keeping an eye on these guys and you can to by heading on over to their MySpace site by finding them in our Top Friendspage, or you can catch them January 27th at the Elbow Room in Ypsi.

Lithium. Go ahead, say it again, Lithium. Even the name warns of trouble brewing when this power house group steps up on stage to deliver that loud volume, high energy, visually explosive set that may result in a cerebral aneurysm! With front man Pauly taking the spotlight, Lithium delivered another spectacular demonstration of blending their Hardcore Metal with their somewhat lighter side and the result is an amazing journey that can be best described as extreme roller coaster ride, slow and melodic on the climb up, fast and furious on the way down! Always a crowd favorite, Lithium had a full “front stage” tonight as the fans begged for more, only to be cut by the show organizers. Got to be fair to all the Bands I guess, as they did complete their scheduled set. You can catch them performing The Hunt, or Melting Away over at the Harpo’s Metal Fest January 26th where we’re sure you’ll be blown away yourself. Check’em out on their MySpace page which we have listed in our Top Friendson the Dr2 page, or as always, find them in the Dr2 links!

The 4th band tonight was certainly the hometown favorites, since Tripline hails from just down the road from TnT’s, claiming Mt. Clemens as the bands home. Dr2 had the unique opportunity to catch this newly “re-formed” group about a month or so ago prior to tonight, where we were definitely blown away. Hanging out upstairs in “The Rock Room”, they have a weekly open mic night on Wednesday’s, were local performers or duos come to play their originals and/or covers. But on this particular night there was this “semi-band” who were to take the “corner” and perform for the usually small crowds that do more hanging than listening. These guys changed that that Wednesday night as they ripped the place apart within 15 minutes. Getting a chance to chat the guys up afterwards, they informed us that they were putting this Tripline thing back together and would soon be doing shows again, which brings us to tonight. As Tripline jumped up on stage, the first thing we noticed was that they were now a full band, and the 2nd thing we couldn’t help but notice was the literal “Army” of fans who came around the corner of TNT’s and planted themselves directly in front of the stage. Pretty much took up every single square inch of real estate that wasn’t vacant (and some that was!). Wow! What a transformation from the Rock Room to TnT’s, in what was nothing short of a phenomenal set from this rock band whose fronted by one charismatic singer in Chris Allan, has 2 guitarists in Paris, and Kenny Surma, with Chris D’Angelo on keys, and features a rhythm section of bassist Donny Carlson and drummer Brian Hughes. Pure mayhem ensued as Allan lead the show, crazed fans reaching out to show their support, while Tripline held us all hostage, mesmerized by the endless flow of hooks that you could not escape! A true contender, check out Tripline as they kick their machine into high gear hitting up The Ritz on January 12th, & The Emerald for the Girls Gone Wild Party on Valentine’s Day, find them in our Top Friendson our MySpace page.

Capping off the night was Konnipition Fit, lead by Jason Caine, (vox, guitar) former guitarist for 60 Second Crush, with their power pop kind of punk that is laden with heavy visuals. Armed with an 11 song set list, and backed by Lacey (guitar), Eric Vancil (bass), Keith James (drums), and the ever present “Amber Kat” (backing vox), Konnipition Fit pumped their way through their set of their fun loving, guitar shredding, feel good songs much to the delight of the TnT’s crowd. Starting things off with their mainstay Rush Hour, Konnipition Fit knows how to throw down the “visuals”, with Amber Kat constantly on the “prowl” as she prances across the stage while backing Caine on the vocals. Giving Dr2 our favorite in Catnip, Konnipition Fit turned up the heat again with Bi-Girl before Caine hit us with his ever prominent guitar solo with Amber Kat on her knees in worship! Another rip it up set from this group as they ended the night with a cover of Blondie’s One Way Or Another. Konnipition Fit can be found playing all over town, so go ahead and hit up our Dr2 Links or our Top Friendswhere you can find all things Konnipition Fit!

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and tonight was no exception as 4 of the 5 bands would be heading home not a winner, but none should feel chided as all 5 groups performing tonight were great within their own right. It’s all comes down to exposure in the long run, and this 89X Home Boy Battle of The Bands gave all of these groups a lot of that, not only on tonight’s stage, but the night they each won their own play in battle. Well after a long night of enthusiastic rock & roll, Tripline was named the winner and will be playing in the opening slot of the 89X New Years Eve Bash with Hot, Hot, Heat over at the Dearborn Hyatt Regency! Remember for all the Local News, and Reviews keep it tuned right here to Detroit Rock Review.

Rockin In A Blizzard @ Club 54!

Rockin In A Blizzard @ Club 54!

After a long and miserable try to become an “eastside” rock & roll hangout, Club 54 may have finally taken its last breathe as we know it, a promising “new” eastside rock & roll club that had all the potential to become one the premier eastside venues. But alas, all good things must co me to an end! So, here we were sitting in Club 54 this past Saturday night wondering if there was any “salvation” for “Da Club” when lo & be hold Convergence Theory stepped up on stage and performed what can be called nothing short of a complete “exorcism” on the club, in a full blown attempt to rid this beautiful club of it’s past. Performing the procedure entirely from behind a huge “pulpit” positioned up front & center, Convergence Theory began the night’s “sermon-ies”, opening with their huge War, then Calling out the demons lurking throughout the club, while asking if they Wanna Fly or risk being beaten Down by his disciples. For tonight would be like no other night in recent months at Club 54, where local “original” bands had been replaced with the run of the mill “cover band”, bringing even the most stout rock fan to their knees. With Neiko (vox, keys, mysterious powers) literally smoking from the puplit as he and his fellow worshipers Randy (drums), Ty (bass) and Tucker (guitar) chased the demons from the club with A Wait in Time before declaring Club 54 free of all evil spirits with their set closing AngerHead. What an awesome set from Convergence Theory, hailing from Flint, and who braved the storm outside to come help us with this cleansing of the club of spirits past and clearing the way for a full out riot of a rock show. Check these guys out at www.convergencetheory.com , where you can locate where they’ll be playing next, or check out our Dr2 Links where you can also find them. Well, rumors have been rampant about Club 54’s future in recent months as even some big name “personalities” have claimed that it’s doomed to be a dollar store. With the air clear, and Da Club busting at the seams, yes that’s correct, even with blizzard like conditions out, there had to be 250 people tucked inside, Publik Parking, also from Flint, had the “all clear” to christen Club 54 with another amazing set of hard driving rock & roll. Fronted by the lovely Monica (vox), Publik Parking stepped up and delivered a 9-song set that had the front of the stage filling up fast! Backed by Neiko (guitar), Tim (bass) & Erik (drums), Publik Parking proved that rock & roll is alive and well inside Club 54 by performing their Holy, Chant, where Everyday you can Lose Control! Monica’s vocal on the remake of the Cranberries Zombie had Dr2 & Crew sitting up to take notice, in fact we vote their version over that of the aforementioned, literally amazing! Publik Parking had Club 54 up on it’s feet by the time they closed their set with the fire setting Scream, and yes, she did, they did and so did everybody else as Monica’s on stage presence complimented a set that we at Dr2 won’t soon forget. Remember these names, Monica, and Publik Parking, as they not only rocked the club tonight, but they’ll be rocking you before long! Go check them out on our Top Friendslist over on our MySpace page or hit them up at publikparking.com to find a show near you! I wonder how many of you out there have heard of this next band, straight from the depths of Detroit City and constantly on a world wide tour? Choking Susan may not be a house hold name, but they are a world wide force to be reckoned with in the world of Punk Rock. In high demand across the pond, Colleen Caffeine (vox, butt kissing) and her band of bad boys, can throw down with the best of them. Think Ramones meet WendyO! Scheduled to play the “Rebellion Fest” next summer over in the UK, Choking Susan came to the Burbs to teach us all about what Punk Rock really is! Armed with an enormous set list of 14 songs, and 2 extra just in case, Choking Susan unleashed a fury of fast back beats and even faster vocals! From the set opener of Waste My Time and Makes Me Sick, Colleen gives a show that must be seen to be believed, removing her heels during the first song, jumping off stage to dance with the massive crowd, only to return to the stage on her knees then delivering vocals while laying smack down on her back! One wild time as she has as much energy as that pink rabbit that almost matches the color of her hair! Backed by a killer rhythm section of Bob The Builder (drums), LowerGI Joe, and Killer Keith 2Dope, The Susan’s were relentless on their attack of the Club with the sexual overtones of Baby Doll, Tie Me Up, So Pretty, Silcone Chest and Wanker, if you get my drift, even able to perform “hands free” as Colleen Caffeine uses her “Cleavage” as a mic stand! Very entertaining set from these Punkers, who also made it in through all the blowing snow! Stop over to chokingsusan.com and get educated on real Detroit Punk! Now with the snow drifting up against the front door, there was concern we’d all be “snowed” in for the night, Not! We had Lithium in the house, and that’ll keep your feet on the ground, if ya know what I mean. We all know about Club 54 and the promise it held, but if the commotion that we’re hearing in the back room is any indication of success in tonight’s “festivities”, then you better keep your eyes and ears tuned in to Detroit Rock Review over the next couple of weeks as that sound we thought we heard may not of been it’s last breathes as we once thought, but may actually be the waking of a giant that Club 54 once promised to be. Can’t say much more, but remember those terrific nights that once took place inside this place? We do. Well with Club 54 having a “Real PA” brought in especially for this night, all seemed healthy again as Lithium came to celebrate some Birthday’s in the house. Taking the stage amongst the mob of fans, Lithium stepped up to turn out some hard and heavy metal that surprisingly made you want to get up and jam! With the ordinary “metal” bands seemingly there to blow your ears out, Lithium actually has a genuine sound that is loud, hard, heavy and extremely “melodic”! We don’t mean that in a bad way, but with as many metal bands that Dr2 has seen, Lithium breaks that mold with a style of their own, blending rhymes among the vocals, they come across with a raw sound that can’t be ignored. And with an unforgettable front man like Pauly, check out the picture of his brightly “spiked” hair, totally awesome, Lithium came to party! Out of Detroit, Lithium put on one tight set as Pauly takes control of the stage while being backed by the thunderous rhythm section of Carl Shank (hi end guitar), Tom Koppman (bass mechanic), and features Patrick Vadnais with his “percussion concussions”! Bracing for the impending storm, Lithium cranked it up as they gave us Melting Away, a very fitting song for the night, as the snow was piling high outside! This Emotion was exactly what the Club needed tonight as everyone gathered near the front of the stage to rock along with Lithium before having to brave the drive home after the best night of rock & roll Club 54 has seen in a quite a few months! Lithium will be competing this Thursday over at TNT’s for the 89X Homeboy Battle of the Bands Showcase “Finals” for a chance to open up for Hot Hot Heat on New Year’s Eve, so head on over to their MySpace page for all the details! You can find them in our Top Friendsand also in the Dr2 Links you can find right here on Detroit Rock Review. Overall an absolutely excellent night of “Original Music” that we here at Dr2 appreciate more than ever, so go on and check all these bands out as you will not be disappointed, and as always, remember to Support Local Music! If we don’t then no one will!

Keep On Rocking!
