DR2 VENUE VIEW

Dawg house – ( dawg houz) A dawg house is a small shed commonly built in the shape of a little house intended for a dawg. It is a structure in which dawgs are kept or can run into for shelter from the elements.A dawg house should not be too big or too small for the intended dawg because of the potential for excessive heat loss or excessive constriction.

Dr2 looked up the definition you see above for The Dawg House (okay so we edited the spelling a little bit, but the rest is from the dictionary).  What we found is that the definition fits “The Dawg House” to a tee! Located on Groesbeck Hwy in Clinton Township, it is in fact, not a big place, but certainly big enough for a couple hundred of your closest “dawgs” to pile in for some rock-and-roll madness! The Dawg House, owned by Jim Klapp since 2004, is a rarity in the Metro-Detroit music scene.  It is a “structure in which dawgs are kept or can run into for shelter from the elements”.  By that, we mean, on just about any Thursday through Saturday night, you can run from the “club scene” and be treated to some original music from some of the best bands in the metro area as well as some new, “up-and-comers” mixed in.  Entertainment director Mark Jones keeps the mix of new and more established bands fresh so you can count on something different all the time.  This is a true-to-its-roots, rock joint.  “The House” features a great staff, 2 pool tables, TV’s strategically placed around the bar, a patio that is open in the summer and a stage and sound system that blows away some of the more “glitzy” venues around town. Open during the week at 11:00 am, it’s also the perfect place to stop in for a burger and a beer as The Dawg House also boasts a full menu of your favorite munchies.  It is not fancy, just simple and comfortable enough that you can feel good about hanging out with your “dawgs”.  Dawg House Owner Jim Klapp & Awesome Staff With drink specials like 24 oz. cans of beer for $2 before 9:00 p.m. and a reasonable cover at the door, it is not going to break your budget! Da Dawg House has started to feel like DR2’s home-away-from-home as we find ourselves camped out here more and more often because of the chance to see a new band and/or visit with some we already know and enjoy. It is no secret in the music community either, as you will often find bands hanging out at “the House” supporting their friends if they have a night off. We have to give big kudos to Jim for having the guts in the current club/music environment to continue to stick to the live, original music format that he loves.  He is a true supporter of these bands and has fought the mainstream to create an awesome club.  As the last line of the definition says a “Dawg House should not be too big or too small” we think this house is just the right fit.  Not so big you get lost in the crowd, or so small that you can’t have a good bash.  You can check out the Gig Calendar here at Detroit Rock Review or, as always, check out The Dawg House in our Top Friends over on our MySpace site.  Chances are, if you are reading this, you like original music also, so stop by and give “The Digity” a chance, you won’t regret it.

WHAT WE THINK

Okay! Writing about this place is a tall order(no pun intended).  We at DR2 are really impressed with this new country music house on the suburban east-side.  From the info above you can quickly figure out that the folks at The Silver Spur have packed everything you could want for a fun night on the town into one building.  Combine this with a fantastic, country & music-themed, menu ( i.e. “The Grateful Dead”, A large plate of fried ‘shrooms or the “The Ranch Hand”, a big plate of fantastic chicken tenders), a friendly, helpful staff, and live music hand-picked by Howie Deville, and last, but definitely not least for this suds-lover, $1.00 domestic beer from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and all I can say is Wahooooo!  This is a little slice of Nashville brought north.  For example, on a recent Saturday night, the DR2 crew headed over to The Spur for a look-see and we were surprised from the moment we pulled into the lot.  You see, the Spur has taken the effort to cover every detail.  When you get out of your car you are immediately greeted by music.  The Spur pipes music, anything being played inside, out to the lot. We walked in to be greeted by the site of a huge dance floor that was full of two-steppin’ country dancin’ patrons.  These folks knew every dance possible.  This was more than likely the result of the Tuesday night classes offered by The Spur! Well, not knowing any of the dances (yet), we took a seat.  We were quickly greeted and our friendly waitress quickly got our orders and made sure we had everything we needed.  As the night went on the place started to get a bit smoky.  No problem! The manager went over and flipped a switch, and instantly the smoke was sucked out of the place!  The Spur has an incredible air-handling system, a definite plus. With drink specials and good prices for drinks the night was definitely going great.  Add live music by “The Twistin’ Tarantulas” and you have a party!  We enjoyed the entire evening and will definitely keep The Spur in mind when making plans in the future.  I can whole-heartedly recommend it as a nighttime destination or even for lunch or dinner. If you are a little bit country, or even a little bit rock-and-roll, The Silver Spur will give you everything you need!

WHAT WE THINK

Did any of you realize that Gibraltar Trade Center in Mt. Clemens has a “Rock Room” in their parking lot? No? Neither did we here at Detroit Rock Review, until we checked it out last Friday night. From May thru September (this year till October 5th) The Trade Center hosts a weekly “Bike Night” every Friday inside that huge pavilion that sits in their parking lot along side I-94 in Mt. Clemens. Pulling into the lot the first thing you notice is the swarm of bikes parked around the pavilion, reminded us of “Harley Fest” over @ Freedom Hill. As Dr2 entered this “Open Air” facility, the next thing that hit us was the shear enormity of this pavilion, and of course the beer tub filled to capacity with ice cold bottled beer at the entrance. At 7,000 sq feet, there is no need to worry about finding a place to sit & relax! With all the capacity this place has, you’ll have plenty of room for hanging with your friends in this spacious venue. And with the layout being so large, it offers up plenty of options for you to enjoy your night out. You can find a table up front near the action, or if you like it a little more subtle, you can find a spot further away where you can actually carry on a conversation without screaming. And for all you “in your face” types (BTW-that would be Dr2), it offers up a large area in front of the stage for dancing or jamming along to the music up close and personal. Stepping up to the bar, you’ll find plenty of room and plenty of bartenders who will serve you up your favorite domestic beer or well drink faster than you could just get up to the bar in most places! Here’s the good news, at $2.50 a beer, you’ll have plenty left over to order up some burgers to satisfy your munchies! Did I mention that the beer here is cold? I’m not talking frosty cold either, I’m talking about the beers that come out of the COOLER having ice on them! That’s what I call “Cold Beer”! Checking out the set-up for the bands, Dr2 was totally impressed. The band up there tonight was “Dirty Sanchez”, who had us rocking to the classic hits. With an exceptionally large stage, 3 cabinets & 2 subs on each side, Crown amps, and a sound board located exactly where it should be, the sound emanating from this PA was superb! And if all this isn’t enough to quench your rock & roll party thirst, then stick around to 11:30 when the golf cart pulls up with a ton of free pizza! Yes that’s correct, great tasting, “Free” pizza! Ever get that at other clubs? Ok, now for the bad news, this was the last Friday night of the year that this place will be open. But the good news is it’ll be opening up again next year sometime in May, and you can bet that Dr2 will be there! So keep your eyes on Detroit Rock Review as we’ll be sure to let you all know when this “Bar In The Parking Lot” re-opens in 2008 so you can come join us!
