Let The Blowout Begin!
Let The Blowout Begin!
Thursday night had Dr2 heading south into Hamtramck for the first night of the 11th Annual Metro Times Blowout held throughout the city at various clubs & corner bars for a long weekend of local musical mayhem. Blasting into Kelly’s bar for the Bloids set had Dr2 geeked long before we even arrived as this was the same showcase that we caught Hellen for the first time at last years blowout. With a huge gig looming next week down in Austin Texas for the SXSW @ The Blender House , The Bloids used tonight as there last “tune-up” prior to heading to Austin early next week. Awesome set in the cozy setting of Kelly’s Bar where Reverend Jim & Wax, along with their newest members Brian Carney & Steve Stetson, ripped the place apart with an extraordinary performance of their hit song Break Down Calling along with a rare Blowout encore before yielding the stage to Lightning Love. It’s always cool to catch the bands you’ve never seen nor heard of & Lightning Love was one of those bands. A 3 pc out of the Ann Arbor area, they had that electronic indie pop sound, catchy crazy stuff they had, check em out. Packing up, we headed on over to Shenanigan’s to see what was rumored to be Lime Regal’s last show together, arriving in time to catch part of Superdot’s set, a 6 pc Ska band that blends reggae & horns to complete their sound. No lack of energy here.
With Stetson & Carney joining up with the Bloids, there were rumors of impeding trouble for this remarkable band whose latest CD Making Wonder has been gaining them some major attention. After seeing their set tonight, we here at Dr2 certainly hope this won’t be the last we see of Lime Regal as they poured there hearts into an awe inspiring set that light Shenanigan’s on fire! Smoking set. These are the times that make the Blowout so damn, running in and out of different venues never quite knowing who or what you’ll come across. Huddling together to map out the next move, we were off again, this time with a caravan in tow and headed over to Paycheck’s for a heaping of great downriver song’s by none other than Don “Doop” Duprie. Doop & The Inside Outlaws was an excellent choice to finish out the night as Doop & the boys treated us to an awesome set of his favorites off his latest disc called Blood River. If you appreciate the craft of song writing, then you’ll want to catch this guy as he not only writes, but performs straight from the heart with songs that reflect real life and the journeys we all endure. First time seeing Doop live, and we’ll tell ys it won’t be the last! With the 1st night of the blowout coming to an end, it was time to traverse the snow piles and brave the cold as we head home to rest up for another Blowout of a night on Friday! Be sure to check out the pics from the Blowout’s Thursday Edition over on our MySpace page. Remember Friday & Saturday night’s will be jammed packed with more great local music so head on down to Ham Town and get yourself some Blowout!
