TNT’s 89X I’m With The Band 2.0

What a turnout for Week One of the 89X I’m With The Band 2.0 Contest over at TNT’s Thursday Night, definitely looked like a success to us here at Dr2! After a week of online voting, we saw Band With No Name’s song “Empty” win a close contest over Krank Nine’s “Thrill Of It All” followed by Akrylic Sun & Band of One. So it was on to the performances Thursday night to see who would win week one is this once in a life time opportunity.Pulling into TNT’s we could tell it was gonna be a crazy night as the lot was nearly full, with a line to get in, great to see the local support going strong! Lot’s of familiar faces running around too, as many bands that weren’t playing were in the house to check out the action. First band up was one that we had never seen before called Body Of One, looked like they had some tables filled up with fans there for support. Krank Nine, who finished behind BWNN by only 50 votes in the on-line vote, came out and rocked the house with a great performance, nailing their 8 song set that included Dead Dolls, Thrill Of It All, and Pharoes. Really good set by these guys out of Mt Clemens, definitely a group worth checking out! They have a couple of shows coming up over at The Royal Oak Music Theater and The Dawg House so go check em out over at MySpace.com/krankninedetroit. Akrylik Sun had the third spot, and started their set off by having some “dancers” up on stage with during their first song, Hate Me. From Detroit, Akrylic Sun had a good sized crowd with them to, as they romped their way through their set list that included Bed Of Stone and Bitter Taste. Straight up rock & roll from these guys who can be found @ MySpace.com/akryliksun, where you’ll find all things Akrylik Sun!

Well the last band up tonight was Band With No Name, the winners of the on line vote, and judging by the amount of people they brought in who stayed to the end, it came as no surprise that they also ended on top with the vote at the door. Fronted by Jeff Gutt (vox), BWNN came here tonight to make a name for themselves, and did not disappoint, dropping a seven song set that was explosive! Opening with It’s Alright..It’s Over Gutt’s vocals are literally amazing, commanding your attention with his flawless delivery. Backed by an extraordinary rhythm section featuring the bombastic Mike Guy on bass, “Antic” on keys, and Keith Ottenbaucher on drums, Gary Pittel shines through with his crunching guitar riffs during The Criminal. Getting a huge response from the fans was the on-line vote “winning” song Empty, which again highlighted Gutt’s vocal ability and Pittel’s ferocious guitar playing. The definitive moment of the night had to be the set ending Animal Like which erupted the crowd into an impromptu “mosh pit” while the Thunder from Guy’s bass came crashing down on us like a tsunami! Working TNT’s into an “animal like” frenzy, BWNN had Dr2 on it’s feet as they ripped it loud and hard as Guy ended the song with his bass flying to the stage! Unbelievable and a true contender! Possibly one of the best sets we’ve witnessed in a long time around here, especially the amazing energy they expelled doing it! Keep your eyes on these guys as they also won the final phase of the “Judges” vote to sweep the night. They’ll now be heading into the studio where they’ll get to record one song over at Metro Recordings Studio for an upcoming 89X Home Boy Compilation Album. Be sure to mark your calendars as Band With No Name will be back to TnT’s for the first Semi-Final May 1st. Check them out in the meantime over at their MySpace page, you’ll find them listed over in our Top Friends here. Remember, on-line voting has already begun for week 2, where Spades Alone, Konnipition Fit, Red Letter Anthem, and B-Day are competing to win phase 1. We have a link up on the MySpace page to make it easier for you to vote, so till next time, remember to…….SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!
