Rocking Out In Ham Town

Despite sub-zero weather this past Saturday night, Dr2 wasn’t going to miss the Hotness CD Release Party for their disc, “3rd Times a Charm”, at Small’s in the heart of Hamtramck. We knew it was cold outside but the music promised to be smokin’ hot! With temp’s in the teens, Dr2 loaded up and headed south, destination Ham Town! Been a while since we had a chance to get back down to this cool club where we’ve seen plenty of awesome shows, and where anybody who’s anybody in the Detroit Scene has played. If you’ve never been, you really need to check it out, as they have one unique set-up, including their trademark, red-blocked, rock room that houses an awesome sound system. The weather didn’t seem to keep too many people home, as the place was packed, nor did it slow down the Riff2 Nominee, (6 nominations) the Beggars, or their raucous lead singer Steve Tuthill. Storming the stage, the Beggars set out to rip Small’s apart, nearly succeeding as the acrobatic Tuthill swiveled and swayed his way across the stage actually splitting his trousers wide open. Definitely the showman, Tuthill was non-stop action as he “ripped” out some fav’s from their latest release “Party To The People”, including It’s All About Me, Thieves, and Gonna Hava Party. These guys can never stay on the stage and, true to form, Tuthill roamed the crowd and stoked the excitement with their party anthem “Stop, Drop, Rock & Roll”. Certainly worth checking out, you can find them in the Dr2 Band Links and, of course, they’re in ourTop Friendsover on MySpace! The night had just begun! With Universal Temple Of Divine Power on the bill, you know there’s going to be some serious guitar action goin’ down with Elliot Moses and Chuck Burns on stage together. Another Riff2 Nominee (2 nominations), UTDP plays it straight up, with Elliot & Burns trading off riffs & vocal duties throughout the night and Art McCauley & Chris Andrews supplying some serious backing power! Only recently releasing their latest CD, “Hand of God” (check out the Dr2 View) back in November, the guys had some fresh music to showcase and truly rocked the house! Dr2 was blown away with their live show. Bringing the gospel to the rock, UTDP, with their congregation in the house, delivered the message with the tunes “The Man”, “Bite The Apple”, and the title track of their latest offering “Hand of God”. If you too, would like to worship, then be sure to head on over to their MySpace page which, as always, you can find in our Top Friends”. Well, tonight was a long time in the making, and Hotness was in the house to celebrate the release of their Debut CD “3rd Times A Charm” (check out the Dr2 View), and celebrate they did! Another RIFF2 Nominee, The Hotness, has exploded onto the scene in the past year or so, receiving many accolades from within the community. An amazing sight, Paul Barning (vox) not only sings, but kicks it out on an old Hammond organ, lending one unique sound to their classic, blues-infused, brand of rock-&-roll. These guys definitely have the whole rock thing figured out as they have entirely too much fun doing what they do! They tore through their new “classics” incuding Dr2’s favorites, 3” Heels and Last Woman, even coaxing Elliot from UTDP up on stage to join Matt Leider on guitar duty. By that time the house was going crazy! The frontmen get a lot of attention, but rounding out Hotness is none other than Carl “Hotness” Yute (bass) and Jim “Skippy” Denomme (drums). Yet another bombastic rhythm section for this night of pure Detroit Rock! Check out Hotness before it’s too late, as their schedule continues to grow! Check em out over at their MySpace page, find them in our Top Friendson the Dr2 MySpace page, and over in the Dr2 Band Links. Remember to Support Local Music Or Their May Not Be Any.....
