Jeff Gutt in the XFactor Finals
Detroit, MI – Detroit area native Jeff Gutt is knocking on the door of the biggest moment of his career after America voted him through to the finals of the Xfactor last night and appears poised to bust it wide open with a vengeance. Battling through 1,000’s of hopefuls, Jeff Gutt has not only survived, but has thrived on the show with standout performances week after week that will culminate December 18th during the highly anticipated finals that promises a $1,000,000 recording contract with Sony Music. After nearly 2 decades of scratching and clawing his way through a myriad of landmines that is known as “The Industry”, Gutt is now staring at his lifelong dream straight in the eyes. Having honed his miraculous voice in and around the local music scene in Detroit, as well as a brief stint of near fame out in LA with the now defunct Dry Cell, the 37 year old single father has proven to the world that he does indeed have the Xfactor.
We consider ourselves lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know Jeff over the past years. In fact I can recall that exact moment we walked into Johnny G’s. It was aTuesday night in the middle of winter, the snow was blowing, and the windows were all but frosted over. It was the first night of what was being called the “Power Hour”, when all drinks were but a buck. As we tilted a few, a quiet looking man stepped forth to the lone microphone positioned near a makeshift DJ booth and began strumming on his guitar, and started to sing Bad Day by FUEL. By the time he reached the second verse, I turned and said, this guy is good, really good. He had us turning our chairs by the time he reached the chorus of that first song and It was then that I noticed that those frosted over windows were now beginning to clear.
That was the beginning of a friendship that allowed us to witness his ups and downs as he went from playing cover songs in smoke filled bars, head back to LA to try and salvage a quickly dying opportunity with DRY CELL, his return to Detroit that brought him his son, to the phoenix like rise of his then new band that had no name (Band With No Name, see video below) that took Detroit’s local scene by storm, his failed attempt on season 2 of the Xfactor, his return to the smoke free bars & his cover band PUNCH, to now, where he has the attention of the world’s stage at his feet.
Yes it’s been a long and winding road for this man, but all of us here at Dr2 have known all along that he was destined to rise above all, to achieve what only a voice like his could achieve, that he would, given the chance, take the world by storm. We hold our hands high for this guy who is the real deal, who has now put his stamp on those almighty iTunes charts, clearly dominating after a week when all those “other” favorites have faded out of the top ten, for that we say Hallelujah to Jeff Gutt who, in the words of another famous musician from the D, is destined to once again put Detroit City back on the map!
