The Bloids Land On Top!

Big things are happening for Ann Arbor’s own little secret The Bloids which will make it extremely hard for them to be kept secret much longer. You see, not so long ago The Bloids were chosen to compete in a Nation Wide “Battle of The Bands” contest put on by Blender magazine. Pitted against 1,000’s of other bands across the country, this contest was in the hands of the readers, requiring votes to be placed for their favorite song. Finishing in the top 4 nationally, The Bloids, featuring Mr. Wax (vox) & Robert "Reverend Jim" Jones (strings), moved on to the finals where their song “Breakdown Calling” was their ticket to ride against the 3 other bands that reached the finals. Netting over 5,000 votes, The Bloids have just been announced as the winners of the Battle! That’s right folks, Our very own The Bloids were voted the BEST over all others in the NATION! No small feat to say the least. The Bloids credit their fans and the quality of their music for pushing them into the winners circle. “Without your support, we really would be just screaming into the wind” says The Bloids. In fact, we here at Dr2 are not all that surprised at the victory, as we proclaimed back in June that “……..they finished their set with A Girl Named Paradise, a radio friendly song that should be spinning on the airwaves today!” (find that complete story in our show review section) Well I guess they have more than that now as Breakdown Calling is the song that propelled them into the spotlight! This win puts them on the stage for the 2008 SXSW Blender House: Austin Stage, a huge coup as this event showcases some of the best talent at this festival. But that’s not all, they also win a weekend recording session at the infamous PALMS studio in Vegas Baby! The Bloids are also preparing for the National Radio release of Breakdown Calling, as well as firming up their current line-up that will now include Uncle Kracker & Lime Regal Drummer Steve Stetson as well as Brian Carney on bass, also with Lime Regal. And to top this all off, The Bloids will be working on an upcoming Video for Breakdown Calling to coincide with the Radio Release! Good things on the horizon from this fantastic group and one can only wonder where this will all lead them from here, so jump on over to their websites to check them out right here Bloidsband.com! And of course you can find them in our “Top Friends” on our MySpace page or in the Dr2 Links page too!

Local music beat: Know Lyfe goes to Hollywood

Anne Erickson | Lansing State Journal    11/29/07

Local metal band wins national contest, plays label showcase tonight

The members of Know Lyfe are not the kind of guys who would be content just resting on their laurels. The Lansing metal boys like to keep busy. They’ve played the Warped Tour - twice. They’ve opened for major metal bands like Atreyu and Lacuna Coil. They’ve toured the country too many times to keep straight. And all that hard work and dedication is paying off - in a big way. The guys just won a national battle of the bands sponsored by Ernie Ball, the guitar-string maker. That means well over $10,000 in prizes and - perhaps more important - a spot on a major-label showcase in Hollywood tonight. “This has changed our entire musical life as a band,” frontman Alfonso Civile said by phone. “It hasn’t sunk in yet. When we got the call, we were all like, ‘No way, this is not happening.’ Civile says this whole experience has been a dream come true. “This is the biggest opportunity of a lifetime,” he said. “For a good three days I could not believe it. I laughed. I cried. I yelled. I went through every emotion in the book. We’re very fortunate, very thankful and we don’t take it for granted,” he said. Earlier this year, Know Lyfe uploaded their music onto the Ernie Ball Web site. Fans across the country voted, and Know Lyfe landed in the top five bands in the nation. That scored them a spot on the Detroit leg of this year’s Warped Tour. And this is the doozy: A panel of judges - from music executives to A&R reps - checked out that Warped Tour performance. They were floored by the killer, high-energy showing and crowned Know Lyfe the grand prize winner, out of 13,000 bands. That earned Know Lyfe a never-ending list of prizes: a $10,000 shopping spree from Guitar Center, a new drum set, practice amps, a bass amp rig and a guaranteed one-week slot on next year’s Warped Tour. And, yes, Ernie Ball is flying the guys out to Hollywood to play a label showcase at Key Club on Sunset Strip. We’re not talking the kind of showcase where people send out handmade fliers to all the labels and hope a few show up. We’re talking the kind that attracts all the majors - Virgin, Epic, Warner Bros., Capitol. It’s the same showcase that launched pop-punk legend Blink-182. So tonight, A&R reps and other heavy-hitters will be watching Lansing’s metal darlings Civile, bass player Waylon Fox, lead guitarist Jerred Pruneau and drummer Matt Martens. Civile says he is humbled by the honor.“We’ve dreamed, day in and day out, about having an opportunity like this,” Civile said. “You fantasize about it, because it’s something you want to happen so badly. And now we’re on this major showcase, and Ernie Ball is paying for all of our accommodations.”Despite the excitement about simply being on the showcase, Civile says he’s also pumped to share the stage with MxPx. The legendary Christian hardcore-punk band is headlining the show. “It’s crazy, when I was a kid, that ‘Chick Magnet’ song was big,” Civile said. “It’s cool. We’re getting to play with a band that in their realm has made huge impact on the music scene, especially the punk and hard-core scene.”Even with all the excitement of the Ernie Ball contest, the guys are keeping their heads on straight. They are prepping for the release of their new full-length, titled “On Cold Hands and Dark Water,” which they will drop at a CD release party at Mac’s Bar Jan. 3.The new CD, Civile says, rocks harder than past albums. “We’re still Know Lyfe,” he said, “but we’ve gotten a lot heavier and the song structure has changed. We’re focusing now on writing songs people can remember, but we’re in no way sacrificing the metal band that we feel we are. “We’re really excited about this record and we think it’s our best yet, a lot of new things on the CD,” he added. As for tonight’s Hollywood show, I asked if there’s anything we here in Lansing could offer for support.“Just check out our new songs on MySpace (www.myspace.com/knowlyfe), and come out to shows,” Civile said. “Not just our shows. We’re talking about our entire local rock and music scene. “Go out and watch other bands you like, because that’s the only way stuff like this happens. Through the fans.”

Show details: Know Lyfe, MXPX, more, Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 11 Finals, doors open at 7 p.m. today, The Keyclub, 9039 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif., $10.

Save the date: Know Lyfe, more, CD release shows, 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Jan. 3, Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., 484-6795; $7 at the door.

"The Bloids" On The Verge!

THE BLOIDS ADVANCE TO THE FINAL ROUND IN A NATIONALCONTEST SPONSORED BY BLENDER MAGAZINE TO SCORE A GIG AT SXSW / SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST 2008

(DETROIT, MI) October 23, 2007 … The Bloids of Ann Arbor have a one-in-four shot of scoring a return visit to SXSW/South by Southwest 2008 as well as a recording session in Las Vegas in the final round of a contest sponsored by Blender magazine, one of the biggest, national music magazines in the country. Voting continues through November 21. Click here to vote: http://www.blender.com/contests/rohto/vote.aspx Blender hand-picked The Bloids as one of only 18 bands throughout the country to compete in this battle-ofthe-bands contest. The Bloids won their preliminary round earlier this fall. In addition to the contest, The Bloids just released a new album produced by Al Sutton (Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Hank Williams Jr.) and Chuck Alkazian (Christina Aquilera, Elton John, The Dave Mathews Band). For their new album Memories of Things I’ve Never Done, Mr. Wax brought his hip hop, old-school R&B roots to the table and Robert 'Reverend Jim' Jones looked to his Beatles/King Crimson background to create a classicrock vibe with a fresh approach. Memories is about love, loss and life’s constant ability to take people to the edge of sanity and back. It doesn't sit in one place - it ebbs, flows, but does so with a concept that creates a concise album. From the heart-felt Girl Named Paradise to the pulsing Anchor to the vibe of Feelin' Me, this CD is meant to move. Unlike their previous EP, Civilized Savage, when they wrote 30 songs in nine days, The Bloids took several months to craft Memories. They had another 30 songs in the end and wrote most of them in the dead of summer in a studio without air conditioning. “I remember sweat dripping all over my guitars after recording various takes,” Reverend Jim said. “Sometimes it felt like a 1960s recording session. No engineer, just Wax and I working hard for 12 hours at a time.” Memories of Things I’ve Never Done is packed with a big team of guest stars including MC Breed, Vinnie Dombrowski, Marlon Young, Jimmy Bones, Chuck Alkazian, Eric Hoegemeyer, Steve Stetson of Uncle Kracker and Allison Friendly who have been involved with everyone from The Dave Matthews Band to Kid Rock and Tupac. Al Sutton of Rustbelt Records was passionate about recording the album. He heard Civilized Savage, dug where they were at, musically speaking, and they finally grabbed a beer and just vibed off of each other. “We all felt that we could do a great album together,” said Reverend Jim. “And there you have it, Memories of Things I’ve Never Done was born. Al has a profound approach to producing and is very clear about what he wants. He knows how to get the right sound and knows what a great song is supposed to be.”  Mr. Wax, who worked with Chuck Alkazian in the past, had specific tracks in mind for him. Chuck did a killer job – check out his high energy, high output work on Anchor. In addition, Memories of Things I’ve Never Done is packed with cameos and guest appearances. Mr. Wax, who has also produced many albums, worked with Vinnie Dombrowski and MC Breed. He even lived with MC Breed for a while. It was only natural to invite the pair to play on their album. Vinnie played drums on several tracks and MC Breed rapped on Feelin’ Me. Then, while they were hanging out at Rustbelt Studios, they met Marlon Young, Jimmy Bones and Steve Stetson. Because Rustbelt is just that sort of studio – people hang out, hear something, groove on it and want to jump in. Marlon kicked it up on the bass with a sort of James Jamerson groove. Jimmy Bones brought the B-3 organ and gave the album a soulful vibe. Steve Stetson is a powerhouse of a drummer. Eric Hoegemeyer also dropped some cool synth lines on All Night. In addition to the album, Mr. Wax was nominated for the Outstanding Hip Hop DJ award at the 2007 Detroit Music Awards and The Bloids recently played with Nashville recording artist Jeff Tuttle at the Midwest Hope on Wheels tour in Hell, Michigan. The Bloids also signed with ValloNicka Films to license two songs in their forthcoming feature film Sometimes in Life. The director of Sometimes in Life is also producing a new feature film with a producer of Deadwood and Gilmore Girls. For more information and to hear fresh tracks, visit www.myspace.com/bloids.
